The Department of Employment and Labour is offering a transformative opportunity through the Compensation Fund (COID) Bursary Scheme for the 2025 academic year. Who Should Apply? Eligibility Criteria

The bursary targets two specific groups. Carefully review the criteria to see if you qualify.

Group 1: Unemployed COID Beneficiaries with Permanent Disability

  • ✓ South African citizen
  • ✓ Unemployed and of working age
  • ✓ Must be a COID beneficiary with a permanent disability due to occupational injuries or diseases
  • ✓ Accepted to study in one of the specified fields at a recognized institution
  • ✓ Aiming to improve skills for reintegration into the workforce or self-employment

Group 2: Dependants of COID Beneficiaries

  • ✓ South African citizen, aged between 17 and 35 years old
  • ✓ Dependant of a COID beneficiary with permanent disablement or of a fatally injured employee
  • ✓ Accepted to study in one of the mentioned fields (or others considered by the fund)

What Can You Study? Fields of Study Covered

This bursary supports a wide range of fields to cater to diverse interests and market needs. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Engineering: Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, and more.
  • Technology: Data Science, Information Technology, and Cybersecurity.
  • Health Sciences: Various Health and Clinical Science programmes.
  • Business & Finance: Actuarial Science, Accounting, and Economics.
  • Other Fields: Teaching, Agriculture, and other considered fields.

What Does the Bursary Cover?

This is a comprehensive bursary designed to remove financial barriers to education. It covers:

  • ✅ Full tuition fees
  • ✅ Essential study materials
  • ✅ Accommodation costs
  • ✅ A monthly stipend for living expenses
  • ✅ The bursary is renewable each year based on academic performance.

Checklist of Required Documents

Ensure your application is complete. You will need to submit the following certified copies:

  • A valid South African ID document.
  • Your COID pension or claim number.
  • Proof of acceptance from a recognized tertiary institution.
  • Proof of disability (if applicable for Group 1 applicants).
