Opportunity: Court Intermediaries (Two Posts)

Are you a qualified professional in teaching, social work, psychology, or a related field with a passion for supporting vulnerable individuals? The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development is seeking two dedicated Court Intermediaries to provide essential services in the Northern Cape. This is a chance to play a vital role in the justice system, ensuring that vulnerable witnesses are heard and supported.

Position Details

  • Reference Numbers:
    • Colesburg Magistrate Office: Ref No: 82/24/NC/COL
    • Galeshewe Magistrate Office: Ref No: 83/24/NC/GAL
  • Salary: R397 116 – R467 790 per annum (A performance agreement is required)
  • Closing Date: 17 June 2025

Who Should Apply? Key Requirements

Ideal candidates will meet the following criteria:

  • Qualifications: A three-year Bachelor’s Degree or National Diploma in one of the following fields:
    • Teaching
    • Social Work / Family Counselling
    • Child Care and Youth Development
    • Pediatrics, Psychiatry, or Clinical Counselling
    • Educational Psychology
  • Registration: Must be duly registered with the relevant professional body.
  • Experience: A minimum of three (3) years of working experience in the applicable field.
  • License: A valid driver’s license.
  • Advantageous: Experience working with different disabilities, knowledge of court procedures, etiquette, and legal terminology.
  • Legal Knowledge: Understanding of key legislation including the Constitution, Criminal Procedure Act, Sexual Offences Act, Children’s Act, and Domestic Violence Act.

Key Competencies: Exceptional communication and listening skills, empathy, trauma counselling skills, strong interpersonal relations, administrative proficiency, and computer literacy (MS Office).

Your Key Responsibilities (Duties)

As a Court Intermediary, your role will be crucial in facilitating justice. Your duties will include:

  • Providing intermediary services to vulnerable witnesses (e.g., children, persons with mental disabilities) when granted by the court.
  • Arranging for specialized language interpreting services for witnesses testifying via an intermediary.
  • Maintaining the effective operation of the testifying room and the waiting area for victims.
  • Rendering administrative support services in court.
