Are you a dedicated healthcare professional with specialized experience in occupational medicine? The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) is seeking a qualified and experienced individual to join their team as an Inspector of Occupational Medicine. This is a pivotal role ensuring health and safety standards within the mining and petrochemical industries.

About the Role

As an Inspector, you will be at the forefront of safeguarding worker health. Your expertise will be crucial in conducting audits, investigating diseases, and enforcing regulations to create safer working environments in one of South Africa’s key economic sectors.

Key Requirements

To be considered for this position, you must meet the following criteria:

  • A National Diploma in Nursing, Midwifery, Community Health, Occupational Health, or Primary Health Care (NQF 6).
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in occupational medicine.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Sound knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA), its regulations, and directives.
  • Understanding of general mining practices and associated occupational health risks.
  • Knowledge of the petrochemical industry, diving, and related equipment is highly advantageous.
  • Strong researching, communication, and investigative skills.
  • Computer literacy is essential.

Note: Shortlisted candidates will undergo practical exercises and integrity assessments.

Key Responsibilities

Your duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting and reporting on underground and surface audits and inspections related to medical surveillance.
  • Taking necessary enforcement actions to ensure compliance with occupational medicine standards.
  • Investigating and reporting on mine-related diseases, contraventions, and complaints.
  • Analyzing regional mine disease trends to identify high-risk operations.
  • Providing input on mine closures, prospecting rights, mining permits, and environmental management plans (EMPs).
  • Contributing to regional reports and the revision of medical regulations and guidelines.
