About the Role

The Department of Employment and Labour is seeking a dedicated and skilled professional to join the Makhado Labour Centre as a Labour Inspector. This is a critical role focused on ensuring compliance with South Africa’s labour laws and protecting the rights of workers. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting inspections, leading investigations, and promoting fair labour practices in the region.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Qualifications: A three-year National Diploma (NQF 6) or an undergraduate Bachelor’s Degree (NQF 7) in Labour Relations, Labour Law, LLB, or BCOM Law.
  • Experience: Two (2) years of functional experience in Inspection and Enforcement services.
  • License: A valid driver’s license is essential.
  • Knowledge: A thorough understanding of:
    • Departmental policies and procedures
    • Employment Services Act
    • Labour Relation Act (LRA)
    • Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA)
    • Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
    • COIDA, SABS Codes, UIA, UI Contribution Act, Employment Equity Act, and the Immigration Act.
  • Skills: Excellent facilitation, planning, organizing, communication, conflict handling, negotiation, problem-solving, and analytical skills. Proficiency in computer literacy is required.

Key Performance Areas (Duties)

  • Plan and conduct independent substantive inspections to ensure compliance with the BCEA and LRA.
  • Independently execute investigations into reported cases of labour legislation contraventions, including preparing for and appearing in court as a state witness.
  • Plan and conduct proactive (Blitz) inspections to monitor compliance and compile detailed reports.
  • Conduct regular advocacy campaigns to educate on labour legislation.
  • Manage and finalize case files from investigations conducted by inspectors.
  • Contribute to management-level planning, drafting regional inspection plans, and compiling consolidated statistical reports.
